Concocted in Florence in 1919 for Count Camillo Negroni who asked the bartender at Caffe Casoni (now called Caffe Cavalli) to strengthen his favourite cocktail, the Americano, by adding gin rather than soda water. The bartender also added an orange garnish, rather than the typical lemon garnish of the Americano, to signify that it was a different drink.

The original - and still standard - recipe for a Negroni is 1 part gin, 1 part Campari, and 1 part sweet Vermouth. Typically served with a slice ('wheel') of orange, and an optional splash of bitters.

  1. Combine the ingredients in a mixing glass with ice
  2. Stir until chilled
  3. Strain into an old fashioned glass with fresh ice cubes
  4. Garnish with a twist of orange
  5. Serve
