Shaking a drink has the purpose of combining the ingredients of a cocktail and chilling the drink (assuming it includes ice).

It is a vigorous method of mixing and is often preferred over stirring the drink, since it requires the mixologist to strain the drink, leaving out the ice that can dilute the cocktail.

Shaking is done using a shaker or less frequently, a blender. When neither is available, the effect can be passably duplicated by quickly transferring the ingredients and ice from one container to another, then straining into the final glassware.
