Mineral water varieties

Water is an essential component in many cocktails.

Mineral water[]

Mineral water is water containing minerals or other dissolved substances that alter its taste or give it therapeutic value, generally obtained from a naturally occurring mineral spring or source. Dissolved substances in the water may include various salts and sulfur compounds. Mineral water can be sparkling (with effervescence), or still (without effervescence). Some popular brands include San Pellegrino and Apollinaris water.

Apollinaris is a brand of effervescent table water, very well-known in German-speaking countries as "The Queen of Table Waters". Since 1852, Apollinaris has been sourced from a spring in Bad Neuenahr, Germany.

Sodas and seltzers[]

Club soda, soda water, carbonated water, seltzer.

Soda water may be identical to plain carbonated water or it may contain a small amount of table salt, sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, potassium citrate, potassium sulfate, or disodium phosphate, depending on the bottler. Club soda is just a different name for soda water.

Water and Whiskey[]

Adding water to whiskey is said to "awaken" the flavours inherent in the spirit. Most whiskey distilleries have drawn their water from the same place since their establishment, due to the unique mineral content of that particular location's water. Whiskey afficionados attest that when the proper water is used, generally from the same location that a single-malt or unblended whiskey is produced, the result is a superior product.
